- Abstract: Objectives: Identification and characterization of DNA repair genes in two phytopathogens to understand the mechanisms by which these organisms respond to environmental conditions, including during plant infection. Methods and Results: For this study we employed a bioinformatics approach end putative open reading frames known to be involved in DNA repair from both bacteria were compared and a phylogenetic analysis was performed aiming to understand how and why the differences and similarities between these organisms may have arisen. Conclusion: Althought the phylogenetic analysis confirms the close proximity between Xylella fastiosa and Xanthomonas axonopodis, many differences were found in the identification of evolutionary events in the origin of each gene used to generate the gene trees. Duplicated genes (such as uvrA, uvrC and uvrD) in Xanthomonas have completely different evolution, as one genes is always close to proteobacteria gamma, as Xylella, while the second is very similar to other bacteria or even archeae. A photolyase like gene has been found only in Xanthomonas. Curiously it seems to have a very close proximity to plant genes. The evolution patterns may represent only very old duplication, which have been lost in several bacteria. Otherwise, these may be new examples of lateral transfer among organisms from different life domains
