- Resumo: Plasmodium falciparum is more lethal than the other three species of human malaria. There is an urgent need to develop new therapeutic targets against malaria's parasites, because they are becoming resistant to the most of drugs currently in use in malaria therapeutics. The isoprenoid biosynthesis pathway of intraerythrocytic parasites has been studied and pointed as important target for the development of new antimalarial drugs. This pathway is responsible for the synthesis of prenylated proteins, dolichols and ubiquinones (or Coenzyme Q) in P. falciparum. All these products are derived from linear prenyl diphosphates, which are synthesized by sequential condensations of isopentenyl diphosphate (IPP) with allelic prenyl diphosphates. The condensation is catalysed by a family of enzymes known as prenyltransferases. The inhibition of these enzymes has been the focus of recent efforts to designing drugs. The gene that encodes a kind of prenyltransferases probable catalyses isoprenic chain elongation in the benzoquinone ring of Coenzyme Q - was isolated of P. falciparum. We can predict that such enzyme can be indicated as an interesting target for action of antimalarial drugs, for example, the terpenes. In this work we show the PCR amplification of the product GGIS in P. falciparum; the putative gene encondes the product of GGIS in Northern blot and RT-PCR assays in the different intraerytrocytic stages, we are been trying to express the recombinant protein and topurification they native version
