- Abstract: Human Respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is well recognized as the single most important pathogen accounting for acute viral infection of the lower respiratory tract in infants and young children. Outbreaks of HRSV infection usually occur during the winter and early spring. Early and differential diagnosis of HRSV infections is necessary for monitoring the infected infants, for prevention of nosocomial spread, and, in some cases, to guide the choice of a possible adapted antivirus therapy. An immunofluorescence assay (IFA) of viral antigens in nasal aspirates is widely used for the diagnosis of RSV infections because it is faster than and at least as sensitive as virus isolation technique (VIT). Rapid detection of HRSV is mandatory for early diagnosis, isolation measures, and, if necessary, antiviral therapy. In order to know the prevalence of RSV in children under two years of age admitted at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da UNESP-Botucatu - SP, IFA has been used together with isolation of the virus in HEp-2 cells. During the period of October 2000 to Dezember 2001, 84 samples (nasopharyngeal aspirates) were obtained from different sources (emergency service, pediatric wards and intensive care unit) from children presenting acute respiratory symptoms. Out of 84 nasopharyngeal aspirates, 16(19,04%) were found positive by IFA, RT-PCR analisys failed to detect one of this positive samples showing that IFA, still a more sensitive detectio method. Weconfirmed the usual HRSV sazonality of subtropical countrys, in our region, with a positivity between June and July
