- Abstract: Porcine rotaviruses are a significant cause of diarrhea in swine farms worldwide. A total of 59 porcine rotavirus positive samples were previously characterized for G and P genotypes by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with specific primers for porcine, bovine and human rotavirus genotypes. Common porcine G serotypes and P genotypes G3, G4, G5, P[6] and P[7] and atypical serotypes G9 and G10 were detected. Two samples (ICB2191 and ICB2212), from different farms in the same region (Castro, Paraná), displaying G5,P[6] (M37 like), a P genotype normally associated with viruses causing infection in humans, were characterized by partial sequencing of VP4 gene. Analysis of the VP4 nucleotide sequences for these two samples showed 98.8% nucleotide identity to each other, while in comparison with various viruses sequences, representing all 21 P genotypes, results were 79.4% and 78.1% nucleotide identity with the porcine P[13] MDR-13 and less than 60.2% and 59.2% with other P genotypes, including identity of 52.6% and 52.0% with P[6] human rotavirus. Our results suggest that a new P genotype may be occurring in porcine farms in Southern Brazil
