Correlating the periodontal conditions at the lingual surface of lower incisors after the completion of orthodontic treatment (2003)

- Abstract: This work aimed at correlating the periodontal conditions at the lingual surface of lower incisors, five years following the completion of orthodontic treatment. With the amounth of retraction of these teech performed during the mechanics, as well as the initial width of the mandibular symphsis. The clinical periodontal conditions of 49 adolescents divided into two study groups were evaluated 5 years following the removal of fixed appliance. Group I, comprised of 25 patients was treated with the extraction of four premolars and Group II, comprising 24 patients was treated with no extraction. The periodontal assessment included measuring the gingival sulcus depth, the relation gingival margin-bone crest and the gingival recession at the lower incisor´s surface middle with the aid of a milimitered periodontal probe. Following this phase, the amount of retraction for the lower incisors was determined through angular and linear measures. The width of mandibular symphsis on the initial teleradiography was additionally meassured. The measurements obtained in the two groups were compared by means of Student´s "t" test. The extraction treated group presented greater measurements of sulcus depth, relation gingival marginal-bone crest, gingival recession and lower incisors retraction as compared with the group with no extraction. The IMPA decreased in the extraction-treated group, whereas the same measurement increased in the group treated with no extraction. The Pearsoncorrelation test was utilized to correlate the periodontal conditions with the amount of anterior retraction and thee initial width of mandibular symphsis, with no significant correlation among the variables evaluated
