- Abstract: Burning mouth syndrome is a chronic pain syndrome that mainly affects middle-aged / old women with hormonal changes or psychological disorders. Affected patients often present multiple oral complaints, including burning, dryness and taste alterations. This condition is probably of multifactor origin, often idiopathic. Etiopathogenesis is enigmatic and a large number of patients probably involve interactions among local, systemic, and psychogenic factors. In the other cases, new interesting associations have recently emerged. Tipically, patients note increasing symptoms through the day and into evening. Conditions that have been reported in association with burning mouth syndrome include chronic anxiety or depression, various nutritional deficiences, type 2 diabetes and changes in salivary function. The differential diagnosis is based on the exclusion of orofacial chronic pain conditions and painful oral diseases exhibiting mucosal lesions. BMS treatment is still unsatisfactory, and there is no definitive cure. Therefore, a multidisciplinary approach is required to offer a better control to the condition. There is no clear consensus on the etiology, pathogenesis or treatment of BMS. We discusse here several aspect of BMS, updates current knowledge, provides guidelines for patient management, and it will be illustrated two cases of Bms
