- Abstract: This article looks at US-Brazilian trade conflicts during Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985), focusing on the long and protracted dispute between Brasília and Washington regarding Brazil's rights to export soluble coffee to the United States (1967-1973). Employing a wide range of documents, including US and Brazilian official and private sources, the paper shows how this trade dispute had a crucial impact on the bilateral relationship and on the way Brazil positioned itself in the global arena, opening conditions for the identification of the military regime with a Third World agenda, and making the NorthSouth divide a priority for Brazil's foreign policy during the global and regional Cold Wars
