- Abstract: Efficient lignocellulosic conversions in biorefinery configurations at demo (flagship) and commercial scale require relevant mechanical, chemical, and biochemical issues to be identified and managed in order to overcome costly hurdles prior to operating. High recovery and selective conversion of lignocellulosic sugars into target products, effective integration, and reduced process downtime levels can be pointed out as major scale-up challenges being faced by the diverse flagships and commercial-scale biorefineries worldwide. High feedstock recalcitrance, biomass clogging in the feeding devices, accumulation of biomass in curves and pipelines, erosion and corrosion of equipment, devices, and valves emerge as frequent issues that increase operational and capital costs and process downtime, thus reducing overall process reliability. The adoption of pseudo-continuous (synchronized batch) configurations coupled with preconditioning of the biomass feedstock using sprinkling or water washing and stripping, the use of catalysts and promoters to reduce thermal-mechanical severities, and proper design of curves and pipelines have emerged as effective alternatives to minimize problems related to downtime as well as to costly problems related to the erosion and corrosion of metallic parts used in equipment and lines.
