- Abstract: Liquid-liquid extraction has often been the process engineer's preferred choice for developing separation processes and is used to separate and purify various biological products, metal ions, dyes, drug molecules, and small organic species. Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have a potential as recoverable solvents and possible replacements for volatile organic solvents (VOCs), including organic synthesis, catalysis, separation, and extraction processes, because they have many properties of VOCs and unique physicochemical properties. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Bmim]Br), is a hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL) that can be induced to form aqueous two-phase systems, with the structuring salts of water, in liquid-liquid separation and extraction industries. The liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) for 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Bmim][Br]) + sodium citrate + water was experimentally determined at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure (101.3 kPa). LI ([Bmim][Br]) was synthesized in the laboratory and analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) technique. The liquid - liquid equilibrium data were determined by cloud point technique and gravimetric method. The UNIversal QUAsiChemical (UNIQUAC) and Non Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) models were adopted to correlate the measured LLE data. Results indicated that the tested models were able to describe the experimental equilibrium data, producing deviations of less than 1,0%, for both models. These data are expected to be important for the development and design of the extraction process using LI based aqueous systems.
