- Abstract: Simulated fusel oil containing a mixture of ethyl (11.2%), butyl (10.6%) and isoamyl alcohols (78.2%) was used to obtain lubricant esters from Dunaliella salina microalgal oil by enzymatic route using lipase from Burkholderia cepacia immobilized on niobium oxide (Nb2O5) as biocatalyst. Transesterification reactions were conducted in glass reactors with a capacity of 50 mL, containing 10 grams of reaction medium in the presence of iso-octane as solvent at 45° C and agitation (150 rpm) for a maximum period of 120 h. Initially, each alcohol constituent of fusel oil was separately assessed as acyl acceptor following by simulated fusel oil in the transesterification reactions at a fixed molar ratio of oil to alcohol (1:8). As control assays macaw palm oil as lipid source was used under the same reaction conditions. The potential of microalga oil for the production of biolubricant was demonstrated and conversions between 75.5 to 82.1% were obtained in 96 h reaction, depending on size of the alcohol chain. In relation to the quality of the purified products, levels of monoacylglycerols (from 14.2 to 16.9 wt %), diacylglycerols (from 2.4 to 4.6 wt %) and kinematic viscosities (from 8.9 to 11.3 m².s-1) were obtained.
