- Abstract: Daily feeding behaviour has long been recognized as an endogenously controlled circadian rhythm, occurring during the wake phase of the sleep/wake rhythms of organisms. The question of whether feeding and sleep/wake rhythms are under the same temporal control is still open. Here we present the emerging patterns of feeding and sleep/wake rhythms in an infant that was breastfed ad libitum and submitted to photic and non-photic Zeitgebers during his four first months of life. A comparative picture of the emerging pattern of his elder sister is presented. His mother recorded his feeding and sleep/wake activities daily during four months. We examined the actograms of sleep/wake and feeding activities by Cosinor Method, adopting the significance level at 0.05. Comparing pure-waking/sleep episodes and feeding/sleep episodes by visual inspection we observed that, since the first few days of life, waking episodes are concentrated in the diurnal phase of the day, with rare episodes during the night. Mainly all nocturnal waking episodes are related to feeding and those episodes become concentrated in the diurnal phase of the day by the third to fourth month of life. We interpreted this finding proposing that the feeding rhythm takes longer to become circadian (four weeks) and to become monophasic, concentrated in the diurnal phase of the day (three/four months), than the sleep/wake rhythm.
