- Resumo: Purpose:To evaluate achromatic and chromatic vision of workers chronically exposed to organic solvents using psychophysical methods. Methods:Twenty nine gas station workers chronically exposed to organic solvents (mean labor time: 52.3±64.1 months) were evaluated with the following visual psychophysical tests: Farnsworth-Munsell 100 (FM-100) (n = 26), Mollon-Reffin (MR; n = 17), spatial and temporal contrast sensitivities (n = 25), and static threshold visual perimetry (STVP; n = 21). Results:FM-100 test. Nineteen solvent-exposed workers performed worse than the upper tolerance limit. Solvent-exposed workers as a group made more errors than the control group (p<0.05). MR method. Ten solvent-exposed workers had at least one color discrimination ellipse larger the upper tolerance limit. Solvent-exposed workers had ellipse 1 larger and more elliptical than controls (p<0.05). No differences for others ellipses. Spatial contrast sensitivity. The sensititivy of 13 solvent-exposed workers was lower than the lower tolerance limit at least at one spatial frequency. Solvent-exposed workers had low contrast sensitivity at 20 and 30 cpd (16-30 years-old), 6, 10, 20, and 30 cpd (31-45 years-old), and 30 cpd (46-60 years-old). Temporal contrast sensitivity. Only one solvent-exposed worker had sensitivity below the lower tolerance limit at 1 and 2 Hz. Solvent-exposed workers had low contrast sensitivity at 4 and 8 Hz (16-30 years-old), and 1, 4, 8, 16, and 32 Hz (46-60 years-old). STVP. Only one solvent-exposed worker had mean deviation (MD) value below the lower tolerance limit in the central 10-2 protocol; 10 solvent-exposed workers showed MD value and one solvent-exposed worker had pattern standard deviation higher than the upper tolerance limit in the central 30-2 protocol. Solvent-exposed workers had MD value lower than controls for central 10-2 and 30-2 protocols(p<0.05) (16-30 and 31-45 years-old). Mean contrast sensitivity of the solvent-exposed workers for points between 10-30o was lower than that of controls (16-30 and 31-45 years-old). Conclusion: Color vision losses were more frequent, followed by losses in spatial and temporal contrast sensitivity. The visual field sensitivity was impaired at 10 and 30o of eccentricity
