- Abstract: Objective. Opponent horizontal cells of two types have been routinely described in the retina of cyprinid fishes - H2 (R/G) and H3 (G/BR). When stimulation included the UV, a tetraphasic cell types was found (Neurosci. Res., 8:81-95, 1988). The objective of the present work was to identify types of horizontal cells using UV/visible stimulation in the retina of a neotropical characiform species (Prochilodus lineatus) whose retina is studied here for the first time. Methods. Intracellular recordings were made on isolated retinae placed photoreceptor side up on filter, and wetted with fish physiological solution. Glass microelectrodes filled with Neurobiotin in IM KCI, with resistances from 100 to 400 MΏ, were used. Stimuli were wide field monochromatic, equal quanta flashes, with wavelenghts from to 700 nm. Results: Biphasic, triphasic and tetraphasic spectrally opponent types of horizontal cells were found. biphasic cells hyperpolarized from the UV to 620 nm and depolarized above 620 nm (-UV, S, M/+L). Triphasic cells were types: one type depolarized in the green and hyperpolarized in UV, blue and rede (-UV, S, L/+M); the other type depolarized at the extremes of the spectrum (UV-blue and orange-rede) and hyperpolarized to middle wavelenghts (+UV, S, L/=M). The teraphasic cell hyperpolarized in the UV and the green and depolarized in the blue and the red (-UV,M/+S,L). Conclusion. Two new horizontal cells types were found: a triphasic cell and a tetraphasic cell. Both show opposition between UV and blue light and are approximate mirror images of the known types.
