Nitrergic neurons in the heart of the isogenic mouse (2000)

- Abstract: Objetivo: The cardiac plexus of the isogenic mouse was investigated in whole-mount preparations of the atria by the NADPH- diaphorase histochemical technique to detect the presence of nitric oxide (NO.Métodos e Resultados: Male isogenic mouse of1 month (n=5) were used in this study. The atria were incubated in a special solution for the demonstration of NADPHd. The pieces were mounted as laminar preparations in glycerol. The NADPHd-positive neurons were identified by the formazandeposits filling the cell bodies and processes, and their absence in the cell nuclei. The atria contain on average 57 ? 17 neurons, occurring singly or located inside of the cardiac ganglia. The neurons are pear-shaped with a round or ovalnucleus, and have neuronal cell profile areas between 107 and 460 ?m2. NADPHd- histochemistry also reveals the presence of numerous nitrergic nerve fibers throughout the cardiac muscle layer. The present results provide the first morphological evidence for the incidence of NADPHd in a subpopulation of neurons in the atria of the mouse. Conclusões: The topographical distribution and morphological heterogeneity ofNADPHd-positive neurons may be indicative of several subpopulations of NO-synthesizing neurons, which may act as motor or as interneurons
