- Abstract: OBJECTIVES: Endogenous adenosine is produced by the heart during ischaemia and exercise as a natural cardioprotective nucleoside. Physical training can produce many adaptations on cardiovascular system such as bradycardia, but the underlying mechanisms by which bradycardia is established still not understood. The aim of this work was to investigate the role of adenosine receptors on the bradycardia induced by swim training. Also we evaluated the activation of sympathetic and parasympathetic activity on the rat right atria. Métodos e Resultados: METHODS AND RESULTS: Adult Wistar rats were divided in two groups, control and trained animals. Swim training program consisted of regular physical activity for 8 weeks, five days a week, for 60 minutes each session. After 48 hours of swim training, the right atria were isolated and concentration-response curves were obtained for isoproterenol, (8.76±0.08 vs 9.25±0.12*) carbachol (5.61±0.15 vs 6.07±0.15), CPA (7.73±0.13 vs 8.01±0.18), NECA (6.71±0.18 vs 6.83±0.18), IB-MECA (5.54±0.06 vs 9.71±0.17*) for control and swim trained respectively. Swim trained reduced significantly the heart rate (300±18 beats/min) as compared to control group (396±5 beats/min). No changes were observed on the blood pressure (123±1; 123±6) for control and trained group respectively. Conclusões: CONCLUSION: It is concluided that bradycardia induced by swim training program may involved the participation of adenosine A3 receptors in rat right atria
