Acute stress induced changes in interferon-gamma and physiological parameters in subjects with social phobia (2003)

- Abstract: Objetivo: Identify if immune changes induced by the simulated public speaking procedure would affect subjects with social phobia and without any psychiatric disorders differently. Métodos e Resultados: Subjects were assigned a public speaking task in front of a video camera. Blood samples, physiological (Systolic Blood Pressure, Galvanic Skin Response) and anxiety measures (State-Trait Anxiety Invetory STAI-S) were collected at three points in time along the procedure. NK, TCD4, TCD8 and B peripheral blood cell counts were obtained by flow cytometry and IFN-gamma, IL-2, IL-4 and IL-13 production by whole blood LPS-induced ELISA detection. The results indicate there are significative changes along time induced by the procedure, both in volunteers and patients, in SBP (p<0,000; a=0,05) and STAI-S (p<0,005; a=0,05) parameters. The changes in INF-gamma (p<0,040; a=0,05) are significatively different between both groups and along time. All the other citokines evaluated were undetectable by ELISA. Conclusões: These results show the procedure is effective to induce anxiety and identifiable immune system changes which affect differently patients and volunteers despite the briefness os the stimulus and point towards a different response profile in subjects with low anxiety threshold
