- Abstract: Fish are generally adaptable to changes in environmental cycles like the light/dark cycle (LD). This cycle is the most common and considered the strongest zeitgeber for vertebrates. However, in many species periodic access to food is also able to synchronize different physiological and behavioural variables. In addition, inter and intraindividual variability has also been demonstrated in some species. The appearance of circadian rhythms also depends on individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate whether LD and food availability cycle (EF) were able to synchronize the locomotor activity of juvenile snooks. We also verified the presence of individual variations. Centropomus undecimalis and C. parallelus are species of great economical (gamefish) and ecological importance. Juvenile were collected at Cananeia estuary (São Paulo - Brazil), and then kept in a laboratory lightproof room at 222 C and LD 13:11h (lights on at 6:00h and off at 19:00h). A bulb of a blue light is located at top of aquaria (90lx in the light phase and 1lx in the dark phase). After collection, the fish were kept in adaptation aquaria (80L). The water temperature was 282 C and salinity was 192. Fishes were fed daily with live Artemia salina, Gammarus lacustre, and live small fish. Fish were then transferred individually to experimental aquaria (60L) kept under the same conditions of the previous aquaria. Feeding was ramdom or in accord to aavailability cycle depending on the experiment. Locomotor activity was detected by six pairs of infrared sensors distributed on the surface and bottom of aquaria. Data collected from the infrared sensors were analyzed through the program "El Temps". Actograms, periodograms, and plexograms show synchronization to LD condition, but there is also another rhythmic component of about 23h that does not seem to be synchronized to either the LD or the food availability cycle.
