- Abstract: The First Global GARP Experiment (FGGE) made observations, during the year of 1979, (SOP I and SOPII - Special Observation Periods I and II) of the oceans and the atmosphere of Earth. The experiment had its operational year from December of 1978 to 30 November of 1979 and was the world largest and most complex undertaking ever attempted.Virtually every nation in the world participated in it, some contributing with technically advanced observing systems others upgrading their existing observing programmes or their communication systems, providing operational units or providing financial support. The Implementation/Operations Plan was designed through a series of FGGE publications, which are a demonstration of the outstanding degree of international co-operation which has been achieved amongst the nations of the world in the planning of the experiment. The co-operative spirit started with the GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE) organised in 1974 and it characterised all the various GARP activities since after. The Brazilian GATE Programme and its achievements are described in Mesquita (1976).The adopted resolution N 1721 by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 20 of December of 1961 and the Resolution N 1802 of 14 December 1962, were the basis for the World Weather Watch Programme of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the Global Atmospheric Research Programme (GARP) organized by WMO in conjunction with the International Council ofScientific Unions (ICSU).TheImplementation/Operations plan for the FGGE were presented in a series of publications of the WMO, containing all the national programmes of all countries involved with the experiment. The Implementation/ Operations Plan Volume 7 (1979) contains the Oceanographic Programmes for the FGGE including those of the NOc Prof W Besnard. The Brazilian participation was organized by the National Committee for GARP through representatives of the the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia ; of the Diretoria de Hidrografia e Navegação ( Brazilian Navy); of the Instituto Oceanográfico da Universidade de São Paulo; of the Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais the Serviço de Proteção ao Vôo and from of Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Brazilian oceanographic programme was performed by means of the N/Oc "Prof W Besnard" from the University of São "Prof W Besnard" from the University of SãoPaulo and the N/Oc "Almirante Saldanha" from the Brazilian Navy. Preliminary results of data CTD, Currents , Nutrients and Meteorology from the N/Oc Prof " W Besnard" are presented.
