- Abstract: Histopathological lesions and nuclear abnormalities are used as biomarkers due to its fast and easy interpretation. Few studies using biomarkers in the species Atherinella brasiliensis have been demonstrated in Brazil. The objective of the present work was to investigate histopathological lesions in liver and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes of A. brasiliensis from a beach nearby a marina and also impacted by domestic waste and an unimpacted reference beach in the northeastern of São Paulo State, Brazil. A total of 20 fish were sampled in February 2006 from each studied area. The specimens were measured, weighed and blood and liver were collected and analyzed. The lesion index in liver was calculated according to Bernett (1999), and the morphological abnormalities in erythrocytes were quantified. Specimens of A. brasiliensis from the unimpacted beach were bigger than that collected in the reference area: 123.10 (± 11.5 mm) mean total length, 12.14 (± 3.8 g) mean total weight and presented active gonadal maturation, including spawning and post-spawinig individuals. On the other hand, in the impacted beach small and immature individuals were collected (TL= 79.80 ± 6.4 mm; TW= 3.31 ± 0.8 g). The lesions occurrence were significantly higher in individuals from the impacted beach than the unimpacted beach (p = 0.0016). The most important injuries observed in individuals from the impacted area were the presence of necrotic area in the liver, leucocytes infiltrationand picnotic nucleus. Low occurrence of vacuolization was observed. The lesion index in liver showed significant high values (p = 0.0065) to fish from the impacted beach (Iorg=13) than the other beach (Iorg=7), showing that these individuals are more affected by human activities. Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the individuals from both beaches, concerning notched and blebed nucleus. However the total nuclear abnormalities did not differ Significant differences (p<0.05) were observed in the individuals from both beaches, concerning notched and blebed nucleus. However the total nuclear abnormalities did not differ significantly between the areas. These date suggest no occurrence of genotoxic pollutants in the studied areas.
