- Abstract: Elektrostimulation hat eine lange Geschichte in der Augenheilkunde: Schon 1873 hat Prof. Dor in Bern in seinem Artikel „Beiträge zur Electrotherapie der Augenkrankheiten“ die se als mögliche Therapie unter anderem bei Retinitis pigmentosa vorge schlagen und die Ergebnisse als „er munternd“ bezeichnet. Er folgte wohl einem Trend der damaligen Zeit, in der elektrischer Strom als „Heilmittel“ für alle möglichen Erkrankungen pro pagiert wurde. In den letzten Jahren wurden nun durch zahlreiche Unter suchungen wissenschaftliche Daten zugänglich, die den Schluss zulassen, dass diese Therapieform ein Potenzial besitzt in der Behandlung zahl reicher Augenerkrankungen. In die sem Beitrag soll auf die neuesten wis senschaftlichen Befunde und die da¬raus resultierenden therapeutischen Möglichkeiten der Elektrostimulation in der Augenheilkunde einge gangen werden. Da die Therapie ak-tuell meist über Hornhautelektroden transkorneal durchgeführt wird, hat sich der Begriff „transkorneale Elektrostimulation“ durchgesetzt
